Welcome. We’re so glad you’re here.

Your first year as a school counsellor can feel like being handed a room, a timetable and a lot of worried faces, all at once. If that is how it feels right now, you are in good company. Every counsellor you admire once stood exactly where you are.

You do not need to know everything on day one. You need to know who to ask, what to do first, and how to look after yourself while you learn. This guide is a steady companion for the year ahead: practical, honest about what research does and does not say, and written for beginners.

Your year in four stages

Three things to hold on to from day one

  2. Never promise secrecy. Guide your students on how confidentiality works before you start sessions with them.
  3. Describe what you observe. Do not diagnose.
